Tech Talk: Selecting a Proper Mounting Location for your Newmar Battery Charger
by: Jay Mendoza, Technical Service
The location of your customer's battery charger is
an important factor to take into consideration, as the placement can
often determine the service life of your unit. A location
where the charger will be exposed to minimum heat and
moisture, and maximum ventilation is the most ideal. When
selecting a spot for the charger, keep in mind that heat and moisture
are the enemy, and to be avoided when possible to prevent
overheating and corrosion. Be careful when selecting a
location in an engine room, as this area often has issues with heat and
poor ventilation. On most vessels, the bulkhead is a convenient
location; beware of overhead deck hatches which might
leak. A cabinet or locker must be properly ventilated and
for this reason, we suggest you avoid confined areas with little or no
air circulation for mounting the charger. In
order for the cooling fan to work effectively, the charger must be
located where it can receive a steady flow of fresh air, thereby
insuring proper cooling. It is advisable to position the fan's air
intake away from direct sea water and spray coming into the area where
the battery charger is mounted. It is also wise to advise the crew
not to wash-down the battery charger when cleaning the boat.
With
a little care and planning, one can greatly improve the life and
performance of your customer's Newmar charger. We have seen chargers
returned from the field that were in service over 10 years and they
look like new.
