DC Power Onboard for all Electrical Needs by Louisa Beckett, Soundings TradeOnly, feature article "Power in Transition" - reprinted with permission.
Newmar ranks
among the marine industry's most trusted names for marine power
products, and for good reason. Newmar has been supplying OEMs and
dealers with a full line of well engineered products and accessories
for more than 30 years. Along the way, Newmar has built a reputation of
providing quality products that satisfy the most demanding recreational
boater's needs.
"We
are the reliable and heavy-duty DC power components manufacturer," said
James "Kap" Kaplan, marine and industrial division sales manager. "When
the application is the most critical, we take pride that the Newmar
built DC power components will withstand the harsh conditions that the
marine world throws at them."
Three product categories from Newmar's extensive line of offerings stand out for this season. First, there's the Phase Three Battery Charger series,
which is available in a wide range of power levels, allowing users to
select the right size, features and flexibility required for virtually
any application from small recreational craft to large live-aboards,
workboats and other commercial vessels. Phase Three chargers actively
interact with batteries, putting them through the optimum three-stage
charge process, which provides for fastest recovery times and ideal
conditioning, maximizing battery performance and extending battery life.
Key
features include a selector switch that adjusts output voltage to adapt
for gel-cell/flooded lead-acid/AGM battery types. An optional
temperature compensation sensor also adjusts output for ideal voltage
based on changes in the batteries' ambient temperature. All models are
housed in a rugged, stainless steel case, and the internal circuitry is
polyurethane coated for maximum corrosion resistance. "Currently, we
are in the process of converting the entire Phase Three Battery Charger
series to a stainless steel case that has a new angular cover and
sports a durable, white powder-coat finish that matches the trend
toward all-white engine room equipment," said Kaplan.
Proven in the Field
Another highlight for 2008 is Newmar's complete line of high power DC-AC inverters
with built-in battery chargers. "The circuitry of our inverter-chargers
incorporates a technology that is field proven and was carefully
refined for years in both harsh industrial and sensitive utility
applications," said Kaplan. "Now this rugged design is offered for
marine applications, where reliability and performance are paramount,
and low-noise operation has become a critical factor in the boat
owner's choice of power products."
While
incorporating numerous features, these inverter-chargers are engineered
with a focus on high functionality that installers will appreciate. All
connectors and mounts are heavy-duty commercial grade. Ten models are
available for use with 12, 24, or 32 volt battery systems and provide
continuous rated AC power ranging from 1,800 to 4,800 watts at 115 VAC,
60 Hz. The dual voltage models are a new addition to the line, ideal
for large yachts and commercial vessels with power requirements for
both 115 and 230 VAC equipment.
Finally,
there's Newmar's complete line of electrical installation accessories.
"Besides being a manufacturer of reliable DC power components, we also
offer a full array of installation accessories including junction boxes, terminal strips and other items that make wiring easier for boat installers, ultimately saving the boat owner money," Kaplan said.

Clean Up Your Wiring Act
Electronic installations should look professional on and below the console. Newmar's junction boxes
provide a lasting professional appearance, and makes installers job
easier. Boxes feature multiple cable entry points and terminal strips
are provided, making adding electronics easy. BX series are splashproof
white cast alluminum and PX and EX series are waterproof plastic. A
complete line of terminal strips and bus bars are also available. |
